There will be times when this code won't answer your specific ethical question. That’s because no code can anticipate every business situation that might present an ethical dilemma. To help you work through questions or issues not specifically answered in this code, we have included this section. As you think about the following questions and consider your answers, remember that there's help here at gateway and, as our values say "nothing is the end of the world. There is a solution to everything."
Analyze the situation
• What caused the situation?
• Are there any written Gateway instructions for dealing with the situation?
• Who can you consult to help you work through the situation (e.g., your manager, the Ethics Help Line, a Human Resources representative, the Gateway Law Department, others)?
• What are the possible "right" choices for resolving the problem?
• Is compromise possible without violating Gateway's standards of integrity?
Evaluate the possible "right choices"
• Determine who might be hurt and who might be helped.
• Quantify the extent of the harm and the magnitude of the benefit.
• Of the "right choices" you have identified, which are most consistent with Gateway's values?
Then ask yourself:
• Will my decision seem like the right one the next day or over time?
• Would I feel comfortable telling my manager, my family, my friends, or my religious leader about the decision?
• How would I feel if my decision was publicized in the newspapers or on the radio or television?
• Could I testify in a court of law or before a government agency about my decision without exposing Gateway or myself to liability?
